History
In the 16th century, the city of Selmas became the residence of the Chaldean Catholic Patriarch Simon VIII, who lived in a nearby monastery located in the village of Khosrova. The successive line of Simon VIII was interrupted in 1709 due to the fact that the Chaldean Catholic patriarch returned to the Nestorian church . In the same year, the Holy See established the eponymous Chaldean diocese in Selmaz.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the number of Chaldean Catholics in Selmas was about 10 thousand people. In 1983, due to a significant reduction in the number of believers, the Selmas diocese was joined to the metropolis of Urmia.
