Biography and Research
Hermann Gebel was a native of the Baltic Germans, he was born in the province of Courland of the Russian Empire. His father was a doctor Fyodor Gebel, mother - Caroline. Hermann Goebel studied in the gymnasium in Libava ( Liepaja ). During the years 1860–1862, Goebel studied at the Forest Department of the gymnasium in Mitau ( Jelgava ). In 1863 he entered the third year of the Forest Institute in St. Petersburg . In the spring of the same year, he was in practice at the Lisinsky Training Forestry, where he established himself as a passionate and skillful hunter who took part in organizing the royal hunts, which Alexander II visited with distinguished guests or his retinue. After graduating from the institute in 1964, Goebel was sent by taxator to the Arkhangelsk province , where, along with this, he studied birds.
In the summer of 1865, Goebel moved to Umansky county to manage forest areas, where, in addition to fulfilling his direct duties, he continued to study birds. The stationary observations made by Goebel in the Uman district during the 1860–1870s became the basis for writing a fundamental report on the avifauna of Central Ukraine. The work contains information about the ecology of birds Uman. The author also collected a unique oologichna collection (more than 10 thousand copies), which was later transferred to the museum of the Academy of Sciences of Russia . During his stay on the territory of modern Ukraine, Goebel made short trips to the Odessa region , the Crimea , the mouth of the Dnieper .
In 1875, Goebel and his family moved to Novgorod Province . From 1877 he lived in St. Petersburg. It is known that during this period he temporarily worked at the Zoological Museum of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. On December 28, 1878, Gebel was elected a full member of the St. Petersburg Society of Naturalists. In 1879, a large scientific expedition was organized to study the avifauna of the north of Russia - the area of Ladoga , Onega lakes , Onega Bay , the White Sea , the Kanin peninsula, Novaya Zemlya .
During the years 1882-1884, Goebel was engaged in the organization and was directly involved in the whaling industry in the Barents Sea . In 1894, as a result of his illness, he returned to St. Petersburg. In the summer of 1895 he was a member of a scientific expedition to the Arkhangelsk region . During the years 1896-1888 he organized the herring industry in the Barents Sea, living mainly on Murman , traveling a lot. Thus, during the years 1883-1901, Goebel studied the avifauna on the Kola Peninsula , in the border districts with Finland and Norway . His works on the birds of Lapland and the Solovetsky Islands are also known. In the years 1904-1909 Gebel was sent to Arkhangelsk as a specialist in fisheries and animals. Over time, the state of health forced him to return to St. Petersburg.
Hermann Goebel died on July 24, 1910 in St. Petersburg.
Main publications
Gebel's ornithological works were faunistic in nature; they contain much information on the phenology and nesting of birds. A special place is occupied by publications describing the eggs of various species of birds and their diagnostic features. This information has not lost relevance today.
