Story

In the spring of 1938, four sisters, along with Teinosuke, the husband of Sachiko, came to Kyoto to admire sakura flowers. Sachiko is unhappy that the elder sister Tsuruko, who is the heiress of the Makioka clan and therefore represents the main house of the clan, upset the deal with Yukiko's marriage for the reason that a fatal flaw was discovered in the clan’s clan.

Five years ago, the youngest of the Taeko sisters fled home with Keizaburo Okuhata, the third son of the owner of the Okuhata jewelry store, located in Samba, Osaka Shopping Center. One newspaper conducted this, but instead of Taeko mistakenly wrote the name Yukiko. Tatsuo, Tsuruko’s husband, who represents the main house of the Makioka clan with her, demanded a refutation, but the newspaper only corrected its mistake by writing the name Taeko instead of the name Yukiko, which only aggravated the seriousness of the situation. Dissatisfied with such a turn of affairs, Yukiko and Taeko refuse to live in the main house and move to the house of Sachiko, which is a side branch of the Makioka clan.

Taeko begins to make dolls. Her interest in Okuhata gradually cools and she draws closer to Itakura, who was previously a student at Okuhata jewelry store, but has now become a photographer. Itakura suffers from ear inflammation and premature death. At this time, Yukiko’s bridegroom was arranged with a bank broker, an employee of the prefectural government and a vice president of a pharmaceutical company, but they did not end in marriage because the suitors did not like Yukiko. And then Tatsuo comes home with the news that he is being transferred to Tokyo for work. Tsuruko is lost, does not know what to do.

Yukiko again offers bridegrooms. This time, the groom is a representative of the former aristocracy, the grandson of the Viscount Higashidani. After the death of Takura, Taeko began to walk around the bars, trying to fill her grief with wine. In one bar, she meets the bartender Mieshi, leaves the house and moves to him. Mieshi turned out to be an honest and serious young man, and Taeko begins a new life with him, which reassures the sisters concerned about her fate. Tsuruko, after much hesitation, finally decides to leave for Tokyo with her husband. Yukiko is also doing well with Higashidani, they decide to get married.

And on a winter's day at Osaka Station, Yukiko, Teinosuke and others escort Tsuruko and her family leaving for Tokyo.
