History

The gooseberry culture in Russia dates back to the 11th century. In the 19th century, the old domestic assortment was replaced by West European varieties. The greatest achievements in the selection of gooseberries were made in the 18-19 centuries. At the beginning of the 20th century, a sphere library was brought into Russia from Ireland , and the development of gooseberry culture was suspended for a long time. In order to develop spherical library-resistant varieties combining resistance with weak spiky shoots, breeders resorted to the use of distant hybridization - crossing large-fruited European gooseberry varieties with American species [2] .

In 1934-1950, at the Chelyabinsk fruit and vegetable selection station to them. I.V. Michurina (South Ural Research Institute of Horticulture and Potato) A.P. Gubenko conducted a varietal study of berry crops, including gooseberries. Then he began the selection of gooseberries, as a result of which he bred 2 varieties, one of which is the Chelyabinsk Green . Since 1971, V. S. Ilyin continued his work and received varieties: 'Commander' , 'Senator' , 'Harlequin' , 'Consul' , 'Ural Emerald' , 'Fantasy' , 'Stanichny' , 'Smart' , ' Ural Pink ' ,' Beryl ', ' Ural Besshipny ' , ' Anniversary ' , ' Ural Gem ' , ' Dessert ' , ' Bright ' , ' Cooperator ' [3] .
