Biography

Born and raised in the city of Birmingham in Alabama in the family of a priest and portrait painter. After graduation, she entered the University of Alabama , but soon dropped out for the desire to become an artist. Sebastian moved to New York , where she began to dance and take oratory lessons in order to get rid of her southern accent [1] . In 1924, after a series of unsuccessful trials, she got a small role in one of the Broadway plays, and a year later made her film debut. Having concluded a five-year contract with MGM , the actress appeared in the films California (1927), Our Dancing Daughters (1928), Woman of Action (1928), Marriage to Spite (1929) and Unified Standard (1929) .

By the time the contract with MGM was completed, the actress had not achieved any larger roles, playing only supporting characters. In 1930, she married actor William Boyd, after which her appearances in films became much less common [2] . After a divorce in 1936 [3] , she only appeared a couple of times in the movies, playing episodic roles in the films “Arizona Child” (1939) and “Among the Living” (1941). The name of the actress has repeatedly appeared in a number of court cases related to her tax evasion, drunk driving and divorce from Boyd [4] [5] .

During the Second World War, Sebastian worked as a radiologist at a defense plant, occasionally playing in small theatrical productions. In 1947, she married businessman Harold Shapiro, whose marriage lasted until the end of her life [6] . Dorothy Sebastian died of cancer at the house of film and television actors in Woodland Hills in April 1957 [3] [6] , not having lived a couple of weeks before her 54th birthday. The actress was buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City , California . Her contribution to the US film industry is marked by a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
