The temple was built on the ruins of an ancient monastery, the ruler of those places, the holy martyr, Prince Shalva Toreli-Akhaltsikheli, the national hero of Georgia. The construction began in 1195 and was completed in 1215.
The ruins of residential and farm buildings are still preserved on the territory of the monastery. The entrance to the temple is an arched elongated structure made of red brick. A bell tower was supposedly built above it, and on either side were two-story rooms that served as the core of the monastery complex.
On the northern terrace is the one-nave basilica of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara , and to the northeast of the temple are the remains of a tomb made of stone.
The central temple was consecrated in the name of the Assumption of the Virgin and is one of the most important monuments of Georgian cultural heritage. It is composed of light pink, the so-called "Georgian" brick and is a central dome structure. The height of the temple is 28 meters, width - 19, length - 11 meters. In the north wall, the windows were built up and painted during the construction period. The diameter of the temple dome is lined with azure ceramic details. The painting of the temple is one of the most difficult for its era. The temple was painted in the years 1205-1215. Most of the frescoes have survived to this day. In 2000-2006, work was carried out on their cleaning and conservation.
The monastery is male and worship has been held regularly since 1994.
To the south-west of the temple, a new monastery complex is under construction.
