Season Overview

Walter Röhr at the 1984 Rally Portugal
Michelle Moughton at Rally UK 1984

The German Audi Sport team brought together in 1984 four of the best rally racers in the world, reigning world champion Hannah Mikkol , two-time world champion Walter Röhrl , as well as showing excellent results, winners of the last world championships Michelle Mouton and returning to the team with Stig Blomkvist .

Lancia Martini retained the contract with Markku Alain as the main pilot of the season, Attilio Bettega was also announced on the team. Lancia team leader Cesare Fiorio also signed a season contract with Henry Toivonen saying: “It will be difficult to fight the four Audi pilots together.”

Blomkvist and Mikkola dominate the Audi Quattro A2 all season. Blomkvist in the final classification was higher after scoring five victories during the season. Audi went on a break from the first stages, winning six of the first eight races, including taking the entire podium in two stages. Hannah Mikkola had to be content with second place overall, despite eight podiums this season. Markku Allen finished third season. At the end of the season, former world champion Ari Vatanen “loudly” returned to the rally world behind the wheel of the Peugeot 205 T16, winning three of the last four stages and earning fourth place in the overall standings.

His performance showed that Peugeot Sport, led by Jean Todt , is a very promising team that can get the better of Audi.

As in previous seasons, while all twelve stages were calculated to calculate drivers' scores, only ten of them were included in the manufacturers championship calendar. These two events were in 1984, which was included only in the pilot's classification - the “Rally of Sweden” and the “Rally of Côte d'Ivoire”.
