Biography
Born in the village of Dakhnivka, Cherkasy region (now - a microdistrict in the city of Cherkassy) in the family of a mathematics teacher. In 1925, the family moved to Leningrad. In 1935, Finkelstein’s parents divorced, and he moved with his mother to Moscow. In 1941 he entered the Moscow Aviation Institute . In August 1947, he was arrested on a denunciation and sentenced to seven years in the camps under article 58 , paragraph 10. He was released early and fully rehabilitated in 1953 after the death of Stalin. After his release from the camp, he finished his studies at the Moscow Automotive Institute [1] .
In 1955, after graduating from MAMI, he got a job at the Moscow small car factory as a master of a motor workshop. It is printed, and then goes to work in the factory newspaper "For the Soviet subcompact." He receives an invitation to the industry department of Moscow Pravda , after which he works in the journal Family and School . From 1960 to 1966 he headed the department in the journal “ Knowledge is Power ” [1] .
Escape from the USSR and life in the West
On June 29, 1966, while traveling to England, he applied to the English government for political asylum. Published in the Sunday Telegraph , from 1966 to 1979 he worked on Radio Liberty .
From 1979 to 2006 he worked at the Russian service of the BBC . Since 1987, he was the co-host of the radio program of Seva Novgorodtsev "Crop rotation" [1] .
In 1972 he translated R. Conquest 's book, The Great Terror , into Russian. The translation was published in Italy under fictitious output (Firenze: Editione Aurora, 1974), subsequently reprinted in the journal Neva (1989. No. 9-12; 1990. No. 7-8).
