Biography

Born on August 7, 1923, Iranian Chaldean Catholics Gabriel and Victoria Hofri, who left Iran during the Assyrian genocide during World War I and lived in Iraq. In 1928, the Paulus Hoffrey family returned to Iran and lived in Kermanshah in eastern Iran. In Kermanshah, Paulus Hoffrey graduated from high school.

Paulus Hofrey's father was an accordionist and inspired his son to play this musical instrument. Having mastered playing the accordion, Paulus Hoffrey began playing in Kermanshah as part of the Assyrian Music Ensemble for the Assyrian community of Iran. He studied in absentia in music courses in the USA and received a diploma in musical composition and harmony of the music school "United States School of Music" in New York. Later, for many years, Paulus Hoffrey worked in the choir of the Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Tehran and taught music in music schools.

Paulus Hofrey harmonized numerous Assyrian folk songs. He painted with landscapes of the villages of the Urmia region.

In 1985, the Assyrian American background awarded Paulus Hofrey with an award for the development and preservation of Assyrian folk songs.
