Black Sea coast of Ukraine

The Black Sea coast of Russia . Ukraine disputes the coastline of Crimea .

The Black Sea coast of Ukraine once covered a section from the mouth of the Danube River to the tip of the Kerch Peninsula in Crimea , with a total length of 1,756 km [1] . According to this indicator, Ukraine in 1991—2014. de facto and de jure ranked first among all the Black Sea countries, ahead of Turkey (1,700 km) [1] . In March 2014, Ukraine lost control of the more than 750-kilometer section , which became part of Russia along with the Crimean peninsula, according to the Constitution of the Russian Federation. Ukraine and a number of other countries consider this territory occupied; Ukraine does not exercise actual control over it.

After the loss of control over the Crimean waters, the remaining stretch of the continental coast of Ukraine with a length of 1,006 km falls on the vast northwestern bays, which are generally unfavorable for shipping. This part of the Black Sea is the smallest, coldest and most polluted part of the Black Sea. The coastline here is flat, between the Dnieper estuary and the Dniester estuary, the banks are steep, with a large number of estuary lakes, but with almost no bays . From the Dnieper to Cape Sarych, the coast is severely indented; to the south, the coast becomes higher and steeper. The bottom in this section deepens. Here is the largest bay of the coast - Karkinitsky , nearby is the largest island - Dzharylgach . The climate of the coast is hot and dry in summer, and temperate and humid in winter, winter fogs and thunderstorms, strong winds are frequent. Due to the shallow water and desalination, the waters of this part of the Black Sea quickly cool in winter and become covered with ice.
