Born in 1886 on the Rabbi Valley Plain in Nevada . In 1905 he entered the University of Nevada, but in 1906 received a recommendation at the Military Academy . After graduating from West Point in 1910, he became the 2nd infantry lieutenant.

In 1914-1917 he served in parts of the US Army stationed in China . After the United States entered World War I, he was a lieutenant, and then a major in the 84th division, who fought in France , and in the fall of 1918 took part in the Meuse-Argonne offensive .

In the interwar period he continued to pursue a career in the army and study at military schools. In 1929-1931 he served at the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense, then in the Army Air Force, in 1936-1939 he was at the headquarters of the infantry commander in chief. From September 1939 to October 1940 he commanded the 29th Infantry Regiment. In October 1940 he was promoted to brigadier general and became head of the Infantry Personnel Training Center at Camp Croft. In August 1941, he was promoted to major general and became commander of the 4th Mechanized Infantry Division.

In April 1943 he was appointed commander of the 14th corps, with whom he marched New Georgia , Bougainville and the Philippines . At the beginning of 1945 he was promoted to lieutenant general.

From June 11, 1945 to March 15, 1947 he was commander of the 7th Army, from March 15 to April 14, 1947 - the 3rd Army. In October 1947 he retired.
