Carroll, Samuel

Samuel Spring Carroll ( Eng. Samuel Sprigg Carroll , September 21, 1832 - January 28, 1893 ) - a US military professional, brigadier general of the federal army during the American Civil War . He became famous as the commander of the Gibraltar Brigade, who participated in the defense of the cemetery range under the Gettysburg and in repelling the “ Pickett attack ”.

Early years

Samuel Carroll was born in Tacoma Park, Maryland . He was a descendant of Charles Carroll, who once signed the United States Declaration of Independence. In childhood, he studied in provincial schools, and in 1852 he entered the Military Academy of West Point . He graduated from her 44th grade in the class in 1856 and was assigned to the infantry in the temporary rank of second lieutenant. October 1, 1856 received a permanent rank of second lieutenant and was sent to the 10th Infantry Regiment [1] .

Carroll served on the western border, at Fort Rageli in Minnesota and participated in the war of Yut in 1857-1859. From January 5, 1860 to November 11, 1861, he served as Quartermaster of West Point. April 25, 1861 received the rank of first lieutenant.

Civil War

A few months after the start of the war, on November 1, 1861, Carroll became the captain of the 10th Infantry Regiment, and from December 7, 1861 to May 23, 1862, he served in western Virginia. On December 15, 1861, he became a colonel in the 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment , which in January 1962 was part of the Kimbell Brigade as part of the Lender Division.

In the spring of 1862, during the campaign in the Shenandoah Valley , Carroll commanded a brigade in the division of James Shields . He led the vanguard of the federal army during the offensive, which led to the battle of Cross Cayce . In the summer, he participated in the battle at Cedar Hill , and then was seriously wounded in the chest during skirmishes on the Rapidan River on August 15. Due to injury, he was out of action until September. After returning to the army, he was sent to the III Corps, which in September and October stood in Washington and did not participate in the Maryland campaign. In December, Carroll commanded a brigade in Emiel Whipple's division:

  • 12th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment . Joseph potter
  • 163rd New York Infantry Regiment , Major James Byrne
  • 84th Pennsylvania State Infantry Regiment. Samuel Bowman
  • 110th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, Lt. James Crowther

He commanded this brigade during the battle of Fredericksburg . In this battle, Nathan Kimbell , the commander of the Gibraltar Brigade , was wounded, and this brigade was transferred to Carroll. In the spring, before the battle at Chancellorsville, his brigade was the 3rd brigade of the French division and consisted of six regiments:
