Biography
As a journalist he has been speaking since 1917, as a film critic since 1921. He was the organizer and editor of the Proletkino magazine (1923) and the Kino newspaper (1923-1924), one of the founders and active figures of the Association of Revolutionary Cinematography (ARC) . In 1930-1933 he studied at the Institute of Red Professors . He was the initiator of cinematographic education at VGIK . From 1931 to 1978 he taught and headed the departments at VGIK (since 1940 - professor), in 1934-1936 and 1955-1956 he was the director of the institute. In 1937-1939 he was the director of GITIS . In 1947-1955 he worked at the Institute of Art History .
He was a member of the Union of Cinematographers , from 1967 to 1978 he headed the Council on cinema education at school and university.
He was published in scientific collections, in the magazines Proletkino, The Art of Cinema , The Soviet Screen , etc., in the newspapers Kino, Sovetskoe Kino, Soviet Culture , etc. The author of several books on problems of history, theory and sociology of cinema. The author of the Essay on the History of Cinema of the USSR (1947), one of the authors of Essays on the History of Soviet Cinema (1956-1959), and A Brief History of Soviet Cinema (1969).
Member of the CPSU since 1918. He was awarded three orders, as well as medals.
He was buried at Vvedensky cemetery .
