Biography
Born in Reichenau an der Rax in Lower Austria, on the territory of the Austro-Hungarian Empire , where his family lived in exile. Having chosen a military career for himself, he served in the cavalry regiment of Saxony . In 1900, he was forced to leave military service after an accident that resulted in the death of 25-year-old Saxon Prince Albert . On September 16, 1900, a phaeton in which Miguel returned home from a dinner party collided with another crew. The collision was so strong that the oncoming crew turned over and fell into the ditch, and the passenger who was in it received very serious injuries. The victim of a traffic accident , the nephew of King of Saxony Albert , died a few hours later from his injuries. After the death of the prince, the press unprovenly accused Prince Miguel of the intentional assassination of Albert. Miguel was not brought to trial, but was forced to leave the army and leave Saxony.
In 1901, the name of Prince Miguel reappeared in the press in connection with another scandal. During the official visit of the Portuguese King Carlos I to Great Britain, the prince entered the country to organize a coup in favor of his father.
Marriage
On July 9, 1909, the prince announced his engagement in London with Anita Rinlander Stewart (1886-1977), an American socialite and heiress of a billion-dollar fortune. The wedding took place on September 15, 1909 in a Scottish castle near Dingwall and was the first royal wedding to take place in Scotland since the time of the Stuarts . Before marriage, Anita received the title of Princess of Bragans from the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph , and Miguel, after the marriage ceremony, received the title of Duke Viseu from her father, although this title was not recognized by the ruling monarch of Portugal, Manuel II , who continued to use it in his official title. Despite the unequal marriage of a member of the royal family with a commoner, Miguel retained his rights in the line of succession to the throne, as in Portugal there was no law banning morganatic marriages . After the overthrow of the Portuguese monarchy in 1910, the prince began to play a significant role in politics, supporting the Portuguese monarchists and managing fundraising for the counter-revolution. From 1911 to 1912, Miguel personally visited Enrica Couceira, the former governor of Angola , in Portugal during the monarchist uprisings he led.
Recent years
In an attempt to return the throne to his family, Miguel made several large loans and was on the verge of bankruptcy, even his wife’s significant dowry could not cover all the debts, and creditors arranged an auction sale of confiscated furniture and some personal belongings to pay off the debts. Faced with financial difficulties, the prince gets a job as a clerk in a London brokerage campaign. On July 21, 1920, Miguel, probably at the request of his father, renounced the rights to the Portuguese throne for himself and his descendants, for transferring them to his younger half-brother Duarte Nun. Soon, Miguel leaves Europe and goes to New York, where he died of pneumonia on February 21, 1923.
