Religion in the Kaliningrad region

Religion in the Kaliningrad region has a special specificity associated with the unique history of the region, which until 1945 was part of Germany , and then, in 1946 , according to the Potsdam Agreement , became part of the RSFSR .

The specific specificity of the region’s religion is expressed in the abundance of historical Lutheran churches (churches) with the predominance (relative to the total number of believers) of the Orthodox population. Since the region became part of Russia during the Soviet era, over a long period, religion did not occupy a prominent place in the life of the region at all.

History

The spread of Christianity in the Kaliningrad region is associated with the activities of the Teutonic Order , which settled on the lands of pagan Prussians .

In 1925 (before joining Russia) in the city of Konigsberg (since 1946 - Kaliningrad ), 89% of the population were Protestants (evangelical confession), and 4% were Catholics . By 1948, these communities ceased to exist due to the post-war deportation of the German population in 1947-1949 [1] .

In 1967, a community of Evangelical Christian Baptists was registered in the region, which for some time remained the only legal religious organization in the region. Without registration in Kaliningrad there were small Pentecostal groups (since 1952) and Adventists (since 1980).

On October 6, 1985, the first parish of the Russian Orthodox Church , St. Nicholas, was registered in Kaliningrad [1] .

In 1991, Catholic and Lutheran parishes were registered, as well as the New Apostolic Church . Later there were communities of Buddhists Diamond Way [2] , Jehovah's Witnesses , Jews [3] , Krishnaites (existed from 1993 [4] to 2010), methodologists [5] , Mormons [6] , Muslims [7] and Old Believers [8] .

Stormy religious life in the region began in 1992, after the collapse of the USSR .

Orthodoxy in the Kaliningrad Region

On October 6, 1985, the Orthodox consecrated the first parish in the building of the former German Juditten-Kirche - St. Nicholas Church of the Russian Orthodox Church [1] .

The Orthodox community was originally part of the Smolensk and Vyazma eparchy . In 1988, the Kaliningrad blessing was established. The growth of Orthodoxy in Kaliningrad led to the renaming of the diocese, which in 1989 became known as the “Smolensk and Kaliningrad diocese”.

On September 10, 2006, the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II in Kaliningrad consecrated the new Orthodox Church of Christ the Savior of the Russian Orthodox Church.

On March 31, 2009, a separate Kaliningrad diocese was established , separated from the Smolensk-Kaliningrad diocese . It has 168 temples and 38 chapels. Part of the Orthodox churches are located in the buildings of the former Lutheran churches (for example, Kirch Ponart ).

Lutheranism in the Kaliningrad Region

Lutheranism in the Kaliningrad land has a long and rich history, however, due to the post-war deportation of the German population in 1947-1949 , its tradition died out and began to revive only in 1991.

To date, the Kaliningrad probity of the Union of Evangelical Lutheran Churches (ELC) is operating in the region, consisting of four church regions that feed seven pastors [9] . The central temple is located in Kaliningrad [10] [11] . The community in the town of Gusev [12] is noticeable, where the future archbishop of the ELC, Dietrich Brower , served. There is also a community in the cities of Chernyakhovsk [13] , Slavsk [14] , Gvardeysk ( Mühlhausenskaya Kirkha ), Pravdinsk [15] and Mamonovo .
