Xie Xiande

Born in 1934 in Zhenjiang , Jiangsu Province. When he was one year old, his father died of tuberculosis, and five years later, his mother left her son in the care of her grandparents. When the war with Japan began in 1937, these places quickly fell under Japanese occupation, the Xie family lost all their property and was in distress for a long time. After the war with Japan ended , a civil war followed, and only in 1949 Xie Xiande was able to go to high school, which he graduated in 1952.

In 1952, he entered the geological faculty of Nanjing University , in 1953-1954 he studied Russian in Beijing , and in 1954 he came to the USSR , where he entered the mining faculty of the Novocherkassk Polytechnic Institute . In 1955, he transferred to the Dnepropetrovsk Mining Institute , which he graduated with honors in 1959, receiving the qualification of a mining geological engineer.

In the early 1960s, he studied the minerals of borates and sulfates, discovered four new mineral varieties: carboborite, hunzhaoite, zincobotriogen and zincocopyapite. In the 1960s and 1970s, Xie Xiande took part in studying the consequences of conducting underground and ground nuclear tests in China. At the invitation of the US Geological Survey, he worked in the United States in 1980-1981. In 1979-1984 he was deputy director of the Institute of Geochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the People's Republic of China, and from 1985-1988 he was director of this institute. In 1999-1997, he was Chairman of the Department of the Academy of Sciences of the People's Republic of China in Guangdong Province , and in 1996-2002 he was chairman of the Scientific and Technical Society of Guangdong Province.

In the early 1960s, he discovered four new mineral varieties: carboborite, hunchzhaoite, zincobotriogen, and zinc copiapite. He systematically studied the mineral composition of many Chinese meteorites. In 2008, he became one of the discoverers of a new mineral - chengodait.

In honor of Xie Xiande, a new mineral is named - seit, discovered in 2007 in the Suizhou meteorite, which fell in 1986.
