Biography
Samuel von Brukental was born on July 26, 1721 in Leskirch ( Sibiu County) [3] .
He highly enjoyed the confidence of Empress Queen Mary Theresa , but pushed her son and successor, Joseph II , away from himself because he did not approve of his reforms. Therefore, in 1787 he was dismissed and then did not enter the civil service [3] .
(now the Brookenthal Museum )
Samuel von Brookenthal died on April 9, 1803 in Germanstadt (now Sibiu ) [3] [4] .
Of his literary works in German and Latin, nothing was printed during his lifetime; but in the papers left after him was found a manuscript prepared for printing: " Denkwürdigkeiten der Siebenbürger Sachsen " [3] .
S. von Bruckenthal was childless and used his considerable wealth for magnificent buildings, cultivating gardens and for scientific and art collections. He bequeathed to the Transylvanian Germans his library and his collections, together with capital for their preservation and increase [3] .
The Brookenthal National Museum in Sibiu consists of a library (in 1877 there were up to 30,000 volumes, many precious manuscripts and old printed books), a collection of coins, a collection of minerals and an art gallery (original paintings by Raphael, Guido Reni, Caravaggio, Correggio, Titian, Rubens , Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Tennier and others) [3] .
