Story

Raj and Simran are representatives of the Indian diaspora living in London . Appreciating their Indian roots, they received a different upbringing. Simran grew up in a family of a Punjabi emigrant, Choudhari Baldev Singh, who made a small capital far from his homeland, but devoted to his country of India, its customs and traditions. Simran dreams of meeting a man she loves and wants to live with him for the rest of her life. Her mother, Lajo, is trying to warn her daughter, saying that her dreams are good, but you should not blindly believe that they will come true in life. Baldev Singh receives a letter from India from Ajit's old friend, who wants to keep the oath they gave each other 20 years ago: to marry children when they grow up. Simran is disappointed with this news, as she does not want to marry a stranger.

Raja's father is a very liberal person. Raj fails the university exams, but his father is proud of him, because in the past no one had ever studied at his university. Raj asks if he and his friends can go on vacation for a trip to Europe, his father agrees. Simran also invited her friends on a train ride through Europe. Simran asks her father to allow her this trip, as this is her only opportunity to see the world before marriage. Baldev Singh agrees and releases her daughter, but asks her not to betray his trust, Simran promises.

During a trip to Europe, Raj and Simran meet and fall in love with each other. Learning about Simran's upcoming wedding, Raj goes after her to India to try to please her parents and marry her lover. After a series of amusing situations, Raj manages to get his parents to agree and take the bride with him.

Production

Yash Chopra decided to entrust the debut in directing to his son Aditya Chopra , who had previously worked as an assistant director and producer at his father. Aditya Chopra shot the film, completely based on their tastes. Yash Chopra did not interfere with the direction and did not see the main parts until the completion of the filming [3] .

The film was one of the first to raise the theme of the life of the Indian diaspora abroad and designed for the South Asian diasporas in the West [4] . Subsequently, many films followed this trend: “ Hopelessness of Hope ” (1997), “ And in Sorrow, and Joy ” (2001), “ Tomorrow Will Come Tomorrow or Not ?” (2003), (2005), “ Never say goodbye” (2006).

Originally directed by Aditya Chopra, he thought of inviting Tom Cruise to the main role, because he wanted it to be an Indian - American film, but his father dissuaded him from not wanting to invite a foreign star [5] . Chopra offered the main role to Saif Ali Khan , but he refused [6] . Then Chopra chose Shahrukh Khan , who was also not interested at first because of the romantic nature of the film. In the end, Chopra convinced him that Khan had not ceased to thank him since then [7] . Chopra invited Kajol to the lead female role. Before that, the actors already had experience of working together in the films “ The Game with Death ” (1993) and “ Karan and Arjun ” (1995).

The first was a scene with Kajol for the song “Na Jaane Mere” (“Ho Gaya Hai Tujhko To Pyar Sajna”) [8] . The filming of the scenes of the trip around Europe for the main characters were filmed mainly in Switzerland , including Zanen (scenes at the railway station and scenes on the bridge) [9] [10] , (scene in the church) and in the village of Gstaad [ 11] (scene for the song "Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main"). Many scenes were shot in London and India [12] [13] .

Choreographer was originally , but due to disagreements with Chopra, she was replaced by Faro Khan at the end of filming. Farah Khan put the number "Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane". The art director of the film was Sharmisht Roy [14] , and Manish Malhotra was responsible for the costumes with the help of Karan Johar .

The title of the film ( Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge ) was suggested by actress Kiron Kher and was taken from the song “Le Jayenge Le Jayenge” from the film (1974) directed by Ashok Roy and producer N.N. Sippi. The character of Shahrukh sings short excerpts of this song throughout the film. “Unspringed Bride” is considered to be the only film with the title “proposed” by the song [14] .

After completing the filming, Chopra made a documentary film about the process of filming in the style of Hollywood filmmaking, which had never been done in the Indian film industry. The Making of DDLJ was shown on the Doordarshan channel two days before the premiere of The Bride. “Unspringed Bride” was the first Bollywood film filmed at the film studio. The film was released with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, which was brand new in India at the time.

All Music Bhasker Gupta wrote that the soundtrack was the best in the career of Jatin and Lalit, and called it the beginning of the fifth wave of soundtracks in Indian cinema [15] .

The album was released on July 25, 1995 and became the best-selling Bollywood soundtrack of the year [16] . According to Planet Bollywood, it ranked 6th on the list of the 100 Greatest Bollywood Soundtracks [17] , and in 2005 it was at the top of the list of Hindi soundtracks of all time as a result of online voting by users of the Asian BBC network [18] .

The wedding song “Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna” from this film became a hit, it is still played at weddings, especially in the South Asian diaspora [19] [20] .

Movie Reaction

“Unspringed Bride” received positive reviews from critics and success with viewers around the world [21] . Having collected 1.06 billion INR ($ 17 million) and 160 million INR (2.6 million dollars) overseas in India, it became the highest-grossing film of the year in India [22] [23] and the second most the box office of the 1990s (after the film “ Who am I for you? ”), eventually becoming one of the biggest Bollywood hits of all time [24] [25] . In view of inflation, the “Uncooked Bride” is allegedly among the top five highest-grossing films in Hindi [26] .

Tom Vick of Allmovie wrote in his review: “A very nice movie. A rare example when a three-hour film with a predictable plot makes every minute of viewing enjoyable. ” [27] Charles Taylor of Salon.com remarked: “The film is aggressive and gentle, tough and elegant, elegant and naive, skillfully connecting traditional clichés with modernity. I think this is a classic of the genre ” [28] . Avinash Ramchandani from Planet Bollywood gave the film a rating of 9 out of 10 and wrote that "Aditya Chopra made a film that will probably be watched for many years" [29] - which was confirmed in the continuous movie rental for at least 1000 weeks (more than 19 years) in a row, noted at the end of 2014 [30] . Anupama Chopra included the film in the list of “The 20 Best Hindi Films of All Time” and noted: “Perhaps due to the skillful combination of patriarchal traditions with modernity, the film is a success with all viewers - from the Indian diaspora and from the local audience. Or, perhaps, this is the magic of the screen pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol ” [31] . During a US tour, which took place in 2004 as part of the “Cinema of India”, the film was named “changing the look of Indian cinema” [32] . In the same year, Meor Shariman from The Malay Mail wrote that “everyone interested in Bollywood should watch a movie” [33] .

"Unspringing Bride" is one of the three films in Hindi that are included in the list of "1001 films that you should watch" (along with the films " Mother India " and " The Wall ") [34] , ranks 12th according to the British Film Institute in the list "The best Indian films of all time" [35] and is included in the list of film distribution in India "The largest blockbusters of Hindi cinema of all time" [36] .

Heritage

The painting spawned many imitations of its plot and style, mainly during the 1990s [14] .

Film Studio Yash Raj Films was previously known for using locations outside of India for item numbers in its films. This film has created a trend to show in the plots the Indian diaspora living abroad. It was abroad that became part of the plot of other films. The film also became the first Hindi blockbuster , the main characters of which were Indians living outside India [39] . This helped create the diaspora film market as a vital source of income for the industry; This market was considered a safer financial investment than India's film market [40] .

The key scene where the main character runs to catch a moving train and the hero extends her hand is repeated in the films When We Met , , Chalo Dilli , and Chennai express ” [41] [42] . Also in the movie " Slumdog Millionaire " there is a similar scene with a train and a dance scene for the song "Jai Ho" in the same station as in the original [43] .

"Unspringed Bride" has become the longest-running film in the country [44] and in the world . He is still shown at the Maratha Mandi cinema that broke the record for the film “ Revenge and the Law ”, which was shown for five years at the Minerva cinema, in which they showed the film “The Great Mogul ” for three years [45] . There are often people among the audience who have watched the movie 50 or more times, but still clap, cheer, speak dialogue and sing along in songs [46] , which is comparable to the movie “ The Rocky Horror Show ”, which became the most long-running film in the United States [ 47] .

In 2006, film crew members were invited to dinner by the Consulate General of Switzerland in Mumbai and the Swiss Ministry of Tourism to celebrate the 500th week of the film since its release [48] . In 2010, Yash Raj Films studio signed an agreement between travel agencies in India and Switzerland to provide a tour package called YRF Enchanted Journey, which allows Swiss visitors to view the filming locations used for famous Yash Raj films, including Unclean Bride. [49] [50] .

When the cinema strike at the beginning of 2011 threatened the uninterrupted screening of the film, producer Yash Chopra contacted the cinema owners to continue the show, hoping that the film would last up to week 1000 [51] , which was achieved in December 2014 [52] . In this regard, Shahrukh Khan , Kajol and director Aditya Chopra attended a lively conversation with fans and a formal event at the cinema on December 12 [53] . On the same day they released a deluxe edition of a book about the creation of a film written by Aditya Chopra [54] . The film ended on the 1009th week [55] , but after a while it was decided to restore it [56] .
