Day of Remembrance

Nicephorus was born in Constantinople in the family of the imperial secretary. His father suffered for icon veneration under Emperor Constantine V Copronimus and died in exile in Nicaea . Nicephorus was a dignitary at the court of Empress Irina ( 797 - 802 ) and participated in the work of the Seventh Ecumenical Council convened by her. Later he retired to the Midian monastery , but did not receive the tonsure, but later, when in 806 after the death of the patriarch Tarasius was enthroned. Nicephorus was a zealous advocate of icon veneration and, with the accession of the iconoclast emperor Leo the Armenian ( 813 - 820 ) in 815, he was exiled to the monastery of St. Theodore on the banks of the Bosphorus , where he died in 828 .

In 847, the relics of Patriarch Nicephorus were found , which, according to legend, were incorrupt. They were transferred from Prokonnis to Constantinople and laid for one day in the church of St. Sophia , and then transferred to the church of the Holy Apostles . Currently, the saint’s hand is kept in the Chilandar monastery on Mount Athos .
