Shulgin, Ivan Petrovich

Ivan Petrovich Shulgin (November 4 ( 15 ), 1794 - April 30 ( May 12 ), 1869 ) - Russian historian , privy councilor , professor, dean and rector of the Imperial University of St. Petersburg (1836-1840), academician.

Biography

Educated at the Kostroma gymnasium , and in 1810-1813 - at the St. Petersburg Pedagogical Institute . In 1816 he entered as a teacher and teacher of history and geography in the lower grades of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum , where he was first a teacher and educator, then an adjunct and professor.

Around 1821, he was consecrated into Freemasonry in the St. Petersburg box of the “Chosen Michael,” led by F. P. Tolstoy and F. N. Glinka .

In 1833 he was invited to the Imperial St. Petersburg University to the department of modern history, instead of Degurov who was listed at this department. In the same 1833 he was elected dean of the Faculty of History and Philology, and the next year - rector of the university. Around the same time, Shulgin was elected as corresponding member of the statistical department of the council of the Ministry of the Interior and the scientific committee of the Ministry of State Property .

Then Shulgin was appointed mentor-supervisor for the teaching of political sciences in all military schools. In 1839, he was invited to teach history and statistics to Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich , and then to his cousins, Grand Dukes Nikolai and Mikhail . Shulgin was a close associate in the military department of Y. I. Rostovtsov , a participant in almost all of his transformations in military schools. In 1838-1859 he was a professor of history at the School of Law [1] .

In 1840 he was invited by the Minister of State Property P. D. Kiselev to the council of this ministry; most of all he worked in the commission on the development of the issue of changing taxes, with their transfer from people to land. Full member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences since November 18, 1839 in the department of Russian language and literature. In 1845, Mr .. elected to the Society of Northern Antiquaries in Copenhagen. February 20, 1866, the day of the fiftieth anniversary of his career, he received the Order of the White Eagle and was elected an honorary member of St. Petersburg University.

In 1840 he was awarded the rank of State Councilor , in 1856 - Privy Councilor.

According to the Russian Biographical Dictionary ,

 Shulgin spent the last time of his life among his family, preserving the freshness of his mental powers and interest in public life until the end of his days. As a person, he was always distinguished by a direct, open character, affability and cordiality . 

He was buried in St. Petersburg at the Volkov Orthodox Cemetery [2] .
