Urotrygon venezuelae

Urotrygon venezuelae (lat.) Is a poorly studied species of the Urotrygon genus of the Urotrygonidae family of the caudal colony . It lives in tropical waters of the central-western part of the Atlantic Ocean. The maximum recorded length is 29 cm. The pectoral fins of these rays form a rounded disc. The tail ends with a leaf-like tail fin. In the middle of the tail stem is a poisonous spike [1] . Not an object of target fishing [2] [3] .

Taxonomy

The species was first scientifically described in 1949 [4] . The species is named for the geographic location of the detection of the holotype .

Area

Urotrygon venezuelae inhabit the central-western part of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Venezuela and Bolivia [2] [1] .

Description

The pointed snout forms an obtuse angle and protrudes beyond the edges of the disk. Sprigulae are located behind the eyes. Pelvic fins rounded. In the middle of the tail stem on the dorsal surface is a poisonous thorn. Tail length exceeds the length of the disc. The color is even gray without marks, the ventral side is white [1] [3] .

Human interaction

These stingrays are not targeted. They probably come across as commercial by- catch . The International Union for Conservation of Nature has given this species the status of β€œCauses the least concern” [2] .
