Of the early performances staged by Lazarev, “ King Oedipus ” ( 1916 ) was most successful [1] . After the October Revolution, the director embarked on the development of modern drama, creating an image of a man of the revolutionary era, the builder of the new society [4] . The plays “The Break” ( 1928 ) and “The First Horse” ( 1930 ) conveyed the feelings of the first days of the revolution;
Among the best productions are “The Inspector General ” ( 1927 ), “The Man with the Briefcase” ( 1928 ), “Shine, the Stars!” ( 1930 ), “My Friend” ( 1933 ) [1] .
In 1928 he staged a play by Carlo Goldoni’s “The Servant of Two Masters ”, which was performed in constructive scenery and accompanied by the music of I. Dunaevsky .
The actress N. I. Slonova recalled the time she worked with L. Lazarev in the Rostov (1926-1930) and Saratov (1930-1932) theaters:
A talented, visionary, with an inexhaustible supply of humor, lively, like mercury, Leonid Fedorovich worked fascinatingly. In the actor, he appreciated invention, ingenuity and rejoiced from the heart with every actor's find. At the rehearsal of Lazarev, the actors walked as if on a holiday, and each dragged something different, like bees to the hive. Lazarev selected valuables, rejected unnecessary things — simply and not at all offensive. He worked easily and even cheerfully, although sometimes he exploded with volcanic force because of trivial problems. He rehearsed Lazarev as a man possessed, not sparing himself, and did not tolerate in others the inertia of thinking or a formal attitude to business. Bold in his creative visions, he was sometimes stunned by the distribution of roles. Lazarev did not let the actor calm down, threw him, as they say, from hot to cold, completely ignoring the role.
