General information and history of breeding
Pomeranian sheep are resistant to weather - rain, cold wind, their wool is well suited for waterproof sweaters, jackets, blankets [1] [2] .
This coarse-haired breed has long been bred in rural areas, especially in Pomerania , which explains its name. The average weight of a sheep is approximately 55–65 kg. Both sexes of this breed usually do not have horns, but there are exceptions. Long spiral-twisted wool of Pomeranian sheep can have shades of color from blue-black to brown, beige and gray. Uncoated legs and head are usually black [3] [4] [5] .
There is evidence that the breeding of these sheep has a 3000-year history, the island of Rugen is called their habitat in antiquity [1] [6] . Until the middle of the 20th century , thousands of Pomeranian sheep were raised in Germany , but later there was a threat of their extinction due to globalization and unification of the production of wool products [2] [5] . In 1980, fewer than 100 animals remained. Seven males were selected from them, which laid the foundation for seven lines of further breeding of Pomeranian sheep. The wool of this breed is used to obtain yarn and felt , lambs meat is considered a special delicacy and is highly appreciated by gourmets [6] [7] .
On the initiative of the agrarian association ( German: Agrarbörse Deutschland Ost eV ) and the Lichtenberg leadership since 2009, 20 hectares of land have been allocated for breeding Pomeranian sheep in the Herzberg landscape park [8] . About 130 hardy sheep get used to life in this district park of Berlin , whose visitors, especially children, curiously stop to watch the "animal show in the city center" [9] . The economic benefit of this project is the successful local sale of Pomeranian sheep wool (for hand knitting) and their fresh meat (for cooking) [10] .
