The church was built on the ruins of an early monastery. The construction was completed in 1116, consecrated on October 5. The construction was commissioned by Constantine I, a jurisdict of Torres . The church was entrusted to the Kamalduli monks who founded the abbey here (now destroyed). The building was later expanded with an extension of the bell tower in a style typical of Pisa architecture. Probably the portico on the facade is also late; he is attributed to the masters of Lucca .
The basilica was abandoned in the 16th century, restored and reopened in the 20th.
