Andrei Lizogub and Taras Shevchenko met in February 1846, when the poet traveled through Chernihiv region on the instructions of the Archaeographic Commission.
Together with his brother Ilya, Andrei Lizogub morally and financially supported the poet in exile, corresponded with him, sent paper, drawing supplies, books and money. Subsequently, he kept works of literary and visual heritage of T. Shevchenko.
In 1846 Shevchenko fruitfully worked in an art workshop on the Lizogub estate. According to the memoirs of contemporaries, all the walls of the workshop were filled with poems and drawings. However, part of the works of Shevchenko died during a fire in the estate.
In 1846, Taras Shevchenko painted a portrait of Andrey Lizogub (paper, pencil, 21.3 × 17), which, despite its somewhat etude character, strikes with artistic perfection: Shevchenko was able to reveal the character of Andrei Lyzogub - a calm, good-natured and meek person.
