History
The theater was built in 1902-1903. impresario Daniel Froman and the architectural firm Herts & Tallent to replace the first Lyceum Theater on Fourth Avenue , which closed in April 1902 . Lyceum Theater opened on November 2, 1903 with the performance The Proud Prince. Charles Frohman (Daniel's brother) served as theater manager until his death in 1915 .
Among the outstanding artists who appeared on the Lyceum Theater stage in the early years were: Ethel Barrymore , Billy Burke , Basil Rathbone , Fanny Bryce , Walter Houston , Miriam Hopkins , Cornelia Otis Skinner and others.
Since 1950, the theater has been owned by The Shubert Organization [2] . In 1974, Lyceum Theater was the first Broadway theater to receive the status of a monument of history and architecture, included in the National Register of Historic Places of the United States [3] .
Currently, the theater retains much of its original Beaux Arts design. Including complex marble staircases and a wavy tent. Despite the three-level auditorium, Lyceum Theater is one of the smallest Broadway theaters: it can accommodate only 922 spectators [3] .
The famous Daniel Frohman’s apartment, which is located in the theater building above the orchestra pit, has also been preserved. He asked architects to make a door to the auditorium. Opening it, one could observe the actions on the stage from a bird's flight. Legend has it that once during a performance Daniel opened the door and waved a white handkerchief. Thus, he wanted to tell his wife, actress Margaret Illington , that she was replaying [2] . Now the apartment is used as the archival premises of The Shubert Organization.
