History
Opening
Until recently, Aegista diversifamilia was identified as part of the species Aegista subchinensis , living in most of the territory of Taiwan and described in 1884 [1] by the zoologist and employee of the German consulate in China, Otto Franz von Möllendorf [2] . In 2003, Dr. Yen-Chang Lee from the Academy of Sciences noted that between the western and eastern populations there is a morphological divergence due to the presence of a large biogeographic barrier, that is, the central mountain range [3] . To prove this proposal, Ph.D., Department of Life Sciences, National Taiwan Pedagogical University Zhi-Wei Huang, together with his colleagues on the basis of three molecular markers in combination with morphological analysis, found a greater discrepancy between the species of these snails than previously thought. In particular, it was established that the eastern population is closely related to the snail A. vermis living on the island of Ishigaki , as a result of which it is a separate species divided from A. subchinensis by the Lanyan River [4] , which made this discovery the first to indicate that this water body is a biogeographic barrier for lowland terrestrial animals [5] . At present, specimens are available for widespread study, and several specimens of the species are presented at the Museum of Natural History in London [6] .
Meaning of title
The name of the species Aegista diversifamilia consists of the name of the genus Aegista and the phrase diversifamilia , composed of the Latin words diversus - diverse and familia - family , literally - diverse family . Such a naming was chosen in recognition of the movement for the legalization of same-sex marriage all over the world and in Taiwan [7] [8] , in particular, as a hint of too slow progress of the fight of LGBT activists, comparable to the promotion of the cochlea [9] . The co-author of the discovery, Dr. Yen-Chang Lee, noted that:
When we wrote papers, there was a struggle in Taiwan and in many other countries for the recognition of same-sex marriage. We remembered that pulmonary snails are hermaphroditic. This means that one individual has both the male and the female part of the genital apparatus. These snails personify the diversity of sexual orientation in the animal kingdom. So we decided that this is a good case to remind of the struggle for the recognition of same-sex marriage. [2]
Original Text (Eng.)It was a time when he was preparing for the recognition. It reminds us of the animals that are hermaphrodite animals. They represent the diversity of sex orientation in the animal kingdom. This is a question about the same-sex marriage rights. [ten]
Currently, the conclusion of same-sex unions in Taiwan is prohibited [11] .
Description
Appearance and Dimensions
The shell of A. diversifamilia is thin but durable, with an oblate conical spire ranges from 1.98 cm to 3.24 cm in width, and from 0.97 cm to 1.68 cm in height. Painted in glossy chestnut or yellowish-brown color, and as a rule, it has a narrow light-brown strip on the periphery of the spiral [12] . Aperture has an ovoid shape, from 0.78 cm to 1.32 cm in width, and from 0.48 cm to 1.05 cm in height. White buccal cavity [4] .
Reproductive System Device
The reproductive system is hermaphroditic . The penis is long and thin, but shorter than the epiphallus . Dart Pouch located in the vagina, equal in length to the penis and gradually turning into a short but thick oviduct [4] . The eggs laid by snails are white and round, about 3 mm in diameter, being in a clutch of 20-30 eggs [4] .
Living conditions and habitat
A. diversifamilia is an endemic species of Taiwan , inhabiting the east of the island , north of the Lanyang River , in particular in the districts of Yilan and Hualian , excluding Guishan Island . Specimens of the species, as a rule, are found in lowland deciduous forests and live on the forest floor or on the ground in shady humid conditions [4] .
