Biography
Antonios Politis was born on the island of Syros in 1890, in the family of the director of the local gymnasium, Nikolaos Politis and Angelika Filini. He graduated from the local elementary school and gymnasium, and the lyceum in Athens. In 1907 he entered the theological faculty of the University of Athens , which he graduated in 1914.
In the last year of his studies, he was tonsured a monk in a monastery on the island of Andros . On August 29, 1914, on the island of Syros, Metropolitan of Syria Athanasius was ordained a deacon .
In December 1914 he was appointed preacher to the bishopric of Chalkida and Karistei.
In February 1917, Metropolitan Chrysanthus of Chalcis was ordained as a presbyter in the church of the Virgin Mary Chrysospiliotis in Athens.
Being both an Orthodox Christian and a patriot of Greece, he voluntarily joined the army and served as a military preacher in the garrison of the city of Patras and the 4th and 1st divisions and, in particular, in the 1138 Guards Regiment of the Evzones throughout the war period 1918-1922 .
For service in the expeditionary force during the Minoasian campaign of the Greek army he received the Order: Golden Distinction for Courage, Order of the Phoenix (Greece) (Officer of the Golden Cross), Military Cross, Medal of Military Dignity and others.
Metropolitan of Elis
After the revolution of 1922 he was elected Metropolitan of Elis and ordained bishop on December 24, 1922 [1] .
Throughout the entire period of his stay at the department of the metropolis of Elis, he was busy with the organizational issues of his metropolis.
During his reign in 1939, a building was bought from the National Bank of Greece in the city of Pyrgos , in which the reign of the Elis Metropolis is today.
Anthony knew foreign languages, wrote and published several treatises on historical and social topics and performed several translations. He became a member of the Synod.
The Occupation and Beyond
During the triple, German-Italian-Bulgarian occupation of Greece, he joined the National Liberation Front created by the Communist Party of Greece and in 1943 , leaving his chair, went to the mountains.
After the liberation, he remained in the ranks of the Liberation Front, whereby he was persecuted by the post-war right-wing governments and was deposed by the Holy Synod.
On the eve of the Civil War , Metropolitans Joachim (Apostolidis) and Anthony appealed to the Greek Prime Minister Themistoklis Sofoulis about the need for reconciliation of Greece [2] .
In the period 1946-1947, he translated the book of Journey to the Sea from French by Puquille , after which he wrote an essay “Towards the Youth” (1950), the work “History of the Monasteries of Elis” and compiled catalogs of the libraries of the monasteries.
Death
Anthony died on November 13, 1963 , in the Athenian region of Aigaleo where he lived since 1946 . He was buried in the First Athens cemetery .
Memory
In 2000, on the occasion of the publication by the Church of Greece of the book “Memory and Testimonies from the Occupation” (Μνήμες και μαρτυρίες από τα χρόνια της Κατοχής), the Archbishop of Athens Christodoulos took a timid step towards the “rehabilitation” of the two Metropolitan and Metropolitan Government members Ioac Anthony of Elis. Due to the fact that this rehabilitation was carried out through “forgiveness” (which meant that the church continued to consider the participation of hierarchs in the Resistance a sin), the organizations of the Resistance veterans considered this to be pharisaism and refused to take part in church celebrations.
In addition, Archbishop Christodoulos did not have the courage to rehabilitate the third Metropolitan, a member of the “Mountain Government” - Metropolitan Joiosim of Chios (Strumbis) , deposed from his throne in a parody of the court in 1946, where the Greek regent Archbishop of Athens Damascus was the protagonist [3] .
Streets in the cities of Patras , Amaliada and the only avenue in the city of Pyrgos are named after the hierarch [4] .
Among the sculptural figures of the monument to the Resistance in the city of Pyrgos, there is the figure of Metropolitan Anthony. In the homeland of the hierarch, on the island of Syros , in front of the Transfiguration Cathedral, his bust is installed with the inscription: “Antonios N. Politis. Metropolitan of Elis (1890-1963). Hierarch, a fighter of the National Resistance ” [5] .
Municipality of Aigaleo gave the name of Metropolitan Anthony to one of the streets of his city [6]
