A notch or mortise inlay is one of the methods of decorative decoration, which is carried out by choking a thin metal wire or strip into a specially prepared surface or groove on the surface of the product. It is widely used for decorating cold steel and firearms , armor , kitchen utensils, household items, jewelry [1] , etc.

Process Description

The lines of the desired pattern are engraved on the surface of the product with a small chisel or stichel in the form of recessed grooves with a dovetail cross section. In the received seats, wire is placed and choked. At the final stage, the product is polished and / or varnished .

History

This method has an ancient history and is quite widespread, it was used in the Caucasus, among blacksmiths-gunsmiths of Kievan Rus , in Transcarpathian Ukraine, in some regions of the Baltic states, etc. A special place in this series is occupied by the so-called Tula notch [2] , which received an initial impetus for development at the end of the 17th century in connection with the development of the arms industry in the city of Tula .
