Dave Weindorf , leader of Monster Magnet, described Last Patrol as a return to the roots in terms of creating a sound atmosphere and using recording techniques. The musician also explained that when writing songs, the group emphasized the use in the text of compositions of surrealistic images and concepts from science fiction ^[2] .

Last Patrol was released on October 15, 2013. During the first week of sales in the United States, the record sold 2,300 copies ^[3] , thus taking 188th place on the Billboard 200 chart ^{[4] [5]} . In addition, the album entered the charts of Austria , Belgium , Germany , Switzerland and Finland ^[6] .

Mostly, Last Patrol received critical acclaim. Many observers highlighted the melody and lyrics of the compositions ^{[7] [10] [14]} . For example, Revolver magazine editor Gary Graff wrote that the group continues to “sound fresh and full-fledged” ^[13] . A similar view was expressed by James Christopher Monger, a reviewer at Allmusic . Comparing the album with the previous Mastermind record, the critic noted less rigidity in the songs of Last Patrol , but nevertheless he traced the sound features inherent in the musical style of Monster Magnet ^[8] . Ian Robinson of CraveOnline left a negative review; he substantiated his rating (5 out of 10) as “not interesting” both of the album and of the group itself ^[11] .
