History
The founder of the university is Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner [8] . The University was officially established on October 14, 1882 on the basis of the Punjab University College ( Eng. Panjab University College ) [8] . Unlike the three previously established universities, which were only research institutes, Punjab University was both an educational and research institution from the very beginning. Mohindra College ( Patiala ) was the first college of higher education to become a branch of Punjab University in 1882. From its founding in 1882 until 1947, the Punjab University served the educational needs of the entire region, including the Punjab and Northern India. Pakistan's independence in 1947 reduced the university’s geographical jurisdiction, as it was divided into two separate universities in their respective countries. The Indian part became known as the Punjabi University . Several major institutes that were formerly affiliates of Punjab University have now become independent universities [9] .
