Takuu is located 250 km northeast of Kieta, the administrative center of Bougainville. The atoll consists of approximately 13 coral islets in the east and one islet in the western part.
About 400 inhabitants of Polynesian descent, speaking Takuus, live on the islands of the atoll. The main occupation of the population is agriculture and fishing. The share of agriculture in recent years has been declining due to pollution of fresh sea water.
