Biography
Young years
Scott Ludlam was born January 10, 1970 in Palmerston North , New Zealand , and then moved to Western Australia . He studied graphic design at the University of Curtin , and then political science at Murdoch University . He worked as a graphic designer, director and artist [1] [2] .
Political career
In the 2001 election in Western Australia, , Ludlem was defeated as the second candidate for the Green Party in the upper house State Parliament from the mountain pastoral election region . From 2001 to 2005, Ludlem worked as assistant green senator Robin Chapple . From 2005 to 2007, he worked as a communications officer with the green senator Rachel Sayuert [2] . In the 2005 state election, Ludlem unsuccessfully challenged the site from Murchison Air , receiving 4.98 percent in the primary vote. [3]
In the 2007 federal elections, Ludlam was elected to the Australian Senate from Western Australia. [4] He took his place on August 26, 2008 [5] .
Before the 2013 federal election , Ludlam criticized Prime Minister Tony Abbott , noting that “we still live in moderately high-functioning democracies, although currently blindly,” but “it is better than some of the alternatives” [6] . According to preliminary results, Ludlem went to the Senate [7] , but later there was evidence that he had lost the place that Zhenya Wang took instead from the Palmer United Party [8] . The votes were counted, and according to them, Ludlem with the candidate from the Australian Sports Party Wayne Dropulich got fifth and sixth places, respectively [9] [10] . Later, Ludlam himself requested a new official recount and it turned out that 1375 ballots were missing [11] . The High Court then decided to invalidate the election results and called for new elections [12] [13] [14] . According to the election results On April 5, 2014, Ludlem freely entered the Senate, as the greens increased the share of support in Western Australia from 9.5 to 15.6 percent [15] [16] .
Ludlem is one of 10 Senators from the Green Party and a member of the committees on communications, housing, heritage, nuclear issues, infrastructure, sustainable urban development, assistance on defense, resources and energy [17] . He participates in a large number of political campaigns, including against uranium mining in Dzhabiluk and Western Australia, nuclear weapons, military bases abroad, in support of Aboriginal land rights , recognition of climate change , promotion of fair trade , reform of globalization and the energy market . Since taking office as a senator, Ludlem has advocated for strengthening public property guarantees for the National Broadband Network and a fair approach to the activities of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks [18] . After the disclosure of information on the PRISM surveillance system of the US National Security Agency and on cooperation with him the Australian intelligence services [19] , Ludlam, noting that “it seems everyone is the target of the American intelligence” [20] , said that between July 2010 and June 2011 243,631 warrants were issued to receive telecommunication reports, which significantly overshadowed 3500 permitted by law:

Ladlam has consistently opposed Internet censorship [22] and for protecting the diversity of the media [23] , for peace and disarmament , against the use of unmanned aerial vehicles [24] , against the war in Iraq and Afghanistan with the illegal involvement of the Australian armed forces [25] ] .
In September 2014 , at a Senate hearing on the law expanding the powers of the Australian Security and Intelligence Service to monitor the entire Internet, Ludlam opposed the adoption of this draft [26] [27] . In October, Ladlam took part in the filming of a video of the satirical Internet show Juice Rap News ”, Issued for the G20 summit in Brisbane , in which, together with Australian rappers, he criticized the policies of Prime Minister Tony Abbott and called federal laws fascist in the spirit of Orwell [28] [29] .
Community Activities
In 2007, Ludlam shot the 30-minute documentary, Climate of Hope, that nuclear power is not a solution to climate change [30] . In 2011, Ludleam helped secure the allocation of 264 million US dollars to the National Rental Availability Scheme for the construction of thousands of affordable rental homes [31] [32] [33] . In the early 2010s, Ludlam created the Bike Blackspot app for Apple smartphones , which allows government authorities to report unsatisfactory condition or lack of bike lanes with feedback on infrastructure and safety issues [34] . However, the green campaign to distribute the application was ignored by the authorities, and the existing programs for arranging bicycle infrastructure were cut back [35] [36] .
