The total length reaches 38 cm, about 2/3 of the length is the tail. The head is short with a sharp muzzle, slightly widened in the occipital part. The body is flattened, the forelegs are shorter than the hind limbs. Males are distinguished by enlarged postanal scutes and pronounced femoral pores. The color is yellowish-sandy tones with small brown spots throughout the body. On the upper side of the tail there are transverse rows of spots, alternating with light stripes, creating the illusion of a ring color. During mating, bright orange or red spots emerge on the females on the sides and on the underside of the tail. The belly is light.
He likes arid desert and semi-desert places. Active during the day. Hiding in the cavities under the stones. It feeds on insects and small lizards.
The species is common in the United States (Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, California, western Texas), as well as in northern Mexico.
