Ornstein, North

North Ornstein ( born Severo M. Ornstein - North Ornstein , born 1930) is an American computer scientist , the son of composer Leo Ornstein .

In 1955, he joined the Lynoln Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where, as a programmer and architect, he participated in the creation of the SAGE air defense computer system. He later joined the group working on the TX-2 computer, and then joined the team developing the LINC computer. Together with the team, he moved to the University of Washington in St. Louis , where he was one of the main developers of macromodules.

Upon his return to Boston, he joined Bolt, Beranek and Newman. When the Defense Advanced Research and Development Agency (ARPA) announced a tender for the ARPANET network, it was part of the group that wrote the bid that won the tender. Ornstein was responsible for the development of communication interfaces and other special equipment for Message Processors .

In 1972, he led the first US delegation of computer scientists to visit the People's Republic of China .

Since 1976, he worked at Xerox PARC , where he created a computer interface for early prototypes of a laser printer . He also led (along with Ed McCreight) the team that built the Dorado computer. Ornstein was one of the developers of the program Mockingbird - the first interactive editor of musical notes and led its creation.

In 1980, on his initiative, the Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR) movement was created.

In 2002, he published an autobiography [1] , which describes his life path in the field of computer science.
