General Information
Peter is the eldest of the two sons of Herth and Jenneke Wessels; his brother's name is Rul. The father of the family is an industrial project manager.

Sports career
In the junior career, Wessels' highest achievement was the victory in the men's doubles competition at the French Open , paired with Ramon Slater . He began his professional career in 1996. In the same season, having made his way through qualifications, made his debut in the first adult tournament of the Grand Slam series of the US Open , but in the first round lost to the Frenchman Cedric Piolin . In February 1998, Peter won the Challenger in Lübeck . In April 1999, managed to reach the semi-finals of the tournament in Chennai , and in July to the quarter-finals in Newport . At the 1999 US Open, he manages to get to the third round and thanks to this, for the first time to rise in the world ranking in the Top 100.
In July 2000, Wessels won the only ATP tournament of his career. This happened at a tournament in Newport, where in the finals he outplayed the German Jens Knippschild 7-6 (3), 6-3. In January 2001, the Dutchman reached the quarter-finals in Chennai, and in March reached the semi-finals in Delray Beach .
