History
It all started in 1929, when Wally Byam installed the platform on the Ford T chassis. The construction of a tent over this structure did not give the expected results due to the influence of external weather factors. On the advice of his wife, Byam equipped a permanent shelter and wrote an article about it, intriguing readers with the title "How to Build a Trailer for $ 100."
More specific recommendations Wally Byam began to sell at $ 1 apiece, on which he earned $ 150,000 in net profit. Having started the production of trailers for the needs of friends, due to complaints from neighbors, he rented a separate room for his workshop and began full-fledged work.
Activities
Bayam was engaged in improving his activities, traveling around the world in search of new ideas for improving products. It was compact furniture, sinks and dry closets, butane burners and water heaters - all that made the trailer more functional and comfortable. He acted according to his motto: "We must not change, but improve."
He modified the heating system found in Europe and named it “Byam Burner”. With its compactness, it guaranteed the occupant of the trailer effective heat. The Domestic compact gas fridge found in France put an end to the electric trailer coolers that were inconvenient to operate. Domestic remains the main supplier of Airstream automobile refrigerators.
If the market did not have the necessary goods, Byam agreed on its production. In 1954, he interested the president of Bowen Water Heater Co. in designing a working water heating system for trailers. Some important innovative finds were sold to him by customers. In 1960, engineer Frank Sargent proposed to Bayam a new toilet valve that uses steam pressure to flush waste into a special tank. Since 1962, it was this system that began to be used in Airstream trailers.
One of the main achievements of the company is the creation of the first fully autonomous trailer. The main credo of Airstream trailers is self-sufficiency, design, quality and the use of innovative ideas. This is the basis for the successful work of the company, which has been on the market for more than 80 years.
For NASA , a mobile quarantine van was created, in which astronauts of the Apollo missions were located after returning to Earth. It was written off when they proved that there is no life on the moon.
