Distribution

Neotropics : Central America , South America (from Mexico to Bolivia and Brazil) [1] [2] .

Description

Medium-sized ants (about 1 cm) with large multi-toothed mandibles . The main color is black; the tip of the antennae is yellowish. Head , chest and abdomen are black. The scape of the antennae is long, black. The eyes are large convex, located in the middle side of the head. The sting is developed. The stalk between the breast and the abdomen is one-segmented, consists of a petiol [1] [2] .

Small families include up to 100 workers and one uterus (monogyny); hierarchical relationships are noted among working individuals [4] .

The ants Neoponera apicalis are imitated by the external form (mimic) of the myrmecomorphic spiders Castianeira memnonia [2] [5] and the mantis Mantillica nigricans [6] .

Systematics

The species was first described by the French entomologist Pierre Latreille under the original name Formica apicalis Latreille , 1802 . In 1863 it was included in the genus Pachycondyla , since 1901 - in the genus Neoponera , and since 1995 - again in Pachycondyla and was called Pachycondyla apicalis (Latreille, 1802) . In 2014, during the revision of the ponerin, the genus Neoponera was restored together with the taxon Neoponera apicalis [3] .
