Count Georgii Ivanovich Riboper (1854, Russian Empire , Tsarskoye Selo - 1916, Russian Empire , Moscow ) - Russian public figure who stood at the origins of the Olympic movement in Russia [1] ; a major horse breeder, as well as a strong man, a wrestler [2] and a philanthropist [3] .

Biography
Born in 1854 in Tsarskoye Selo, in the family of hofmeister Ivan Alexandrovich Ribopier (the only son of Count Alexander I. Ribopier, who was influential at the court) and Sophia Vasilyevna, the daughter of the cavalry general Prince V. S. Trubetskoy . A cousin of Princess Zinaida Yusupova .
Childhood and youth spent in Italy, in 16 years, he returned to St. Petersburg. He was in military service - served in the hussar regiment as a gymnastics teacher. During the Russian-Turkish war was seriously wounded.
After the death of his father in 1871, he inherited the Bannoe estate in Novorossiya (now the city of Svyatogorsk ), where he started turpentine and sawmill plants. The mineral springs of this estate had the reputation of being curative and attracted those seeking spa treatment.
In 1879 Ribopier founded his own stud farm in Bann and later became president of the Moscow Imperial Race Society. He made a significant contribution to the development of equestrian sports in the country. He himself participated in races and bred pedigreed trotters at his stud farms [1] .
In 1896, in St. Petersburg, Count Ribopier headed a voluntary athletic society [2] , gathering many like-minded strongmen in one place. The chief editor-publisher and journalist of the sports magazine " Hercules " is an athlete-weight-lifter and wrestler I. V. Lebedev described the athlete of athlete Ribopiere as follows: "If Dr. V. F. Kraevsky was the father of Russian athletics, then Count Ribopier was her" breadwinner ", he invested in the development of Russian sports more than 100 thousand rubles [3] .

Count Ribopier is best known for his contribution to the development of weightlifting and wrestling in Russia. So, in 1897, the first All-Russian weightlifting championship was held in the Petersburg manege belonging to him. Georgy Ivanovich was the chief judge at seven weightlifting championships of Russia (1900-1903, 1906, 1909, 1911) and sponsored four wrestlers to the IV Olympic Games in London who won the first two silver medals in the history of Russia.
He died in 1916, allegedly in one of his estates. He was buried in Moscow at the cemetery of the Novodevichy Monastery , section 3, row 1. Accidental sports historian Vladimir Voronin accidentally discovered the abandoned grave of a forgotten distinguished patron of the arts. He made considerable efforts to create a new tombstone solemnly opened on June 20, 2007 at the Novodevichy cemetery .
Georgy Ivanovich was the last representative of the Ribopier family in Russia. He was married to Alexandra Iosifovna Panda and had the only daughter Sophia (1902-1964). His granddaughter Tamara Archilovna Vachnadze lives in France [1] . At the end of the 2014 Olympic year in Novy Selo, Vyazemsky district of the Smolensk region (the former hereditary estate of the Counts Ribopier), a commemorative information sign was installed in honor of GI Ribopier.
