Biography

Santiago Pino was part of the outstanding team of Penarol, which won five consecutive Uruguay championships at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s (Golden Five-Year Plan, Spanish Quinquenio de Oro ) (1958-1962). In the same period, victories in the first two Libertadores Cup matches (1960, 1961) and the conquest of the Intercontinental Cup in 1961 met. Pino played in the position of the right flank defender or midfielder - this position is known in Latin America as the “lateral”. He became a member of four of the five winning companies in the Golden Five Year Plan [2] .

In 1960, Pino was a player in the main team of Penarol, who won the first Libertadores Cup. He played without substitutions in both finals against Asunion Olimpia [3] . He held both matches against Real Madrid in the first draw of the Intercontinental Cup, but in this confrontation the Spanish team took the upper hand [4] .

The following year, Pino lost his place in the base and played in the second Libertadores Cup in only one match. It was a return semifinal match with Olimpia. Pinot came out at the base, but was replaced in the 40th minute by Dario Cottigu . The game ended with the victory "aurenegros" 2: 1. In the first match at Centenario , Penarol was also stronger - 3: 1. Santiago Pino did not participate in the final games, which resulted in Penarol beating Palmeiras [5] .

In 1962, Pino moved to the Argentine San Lorenzo de Almagro. The first game for the new team was held on March 25 away, against Ferrocarrill Oeste . "Saints" lost with a minimum score of 0: 1 [6] . In total, for the “red-blue” Pino spent three games, did not score goals.
