Biography
Representing Illinois in the House of Representatives, he was close to US President Abraham Lincoln . Originally a member of the Whig party, then became one of the first members and leaders of the newly created US Republican Party.
He replaced William Seward as US Secretary of State in the office of President Ulysses Grant , but stayed only 12 days in March 1869, the shortest time in US history. Then he was appointed to the post of US ambassador to France and played an important role in negotiating a ceasefire in 1870.
After retiring in 1876, he lived in Chicago. He died in 1887.
