Born in the territory of the Great Duchy of Finland that was part of the Russian Empire. He studied architecture at Helsingfors Polytechnic University, was also engaged in sculpture under the direction of Karl Eneas Sjöstrand . After completing his studies in 1878, he went to Paris, where he became a student of Pierre-Jules Cavelier in the National High School of Fine Arts and where he lived for many years.
Most of his artistic heritage consists of bins, candelabra, small statues, decorative mirrors and table lamps, although many large sculptures and sculptural groups of his authorship are preserved in a number of museums. His most famous major work is the statue of a naked woman Havis Amanda (1906) in Helsinki. In Russia, the work of the sculptor is represented by the monument to Torgils Knutsson in Vyborg .
