Geography
The territory of the district occupies 144,143 hectares, which is 4.8% of the territory of the region (7th place among districts). The area is located in two natural areas . The southern part belongs to the forest-steppe , and the northern - to the zone of mixed forests ( Polesye ).
The district borders with Pulinsky , Chernyakhovsky , Korostyshevsky , Andrushevsky , Berdichevsky , Chudnovsky and Romanovsky districts of Zhytomyr region, as well as with the city of Zhitomir (which is not part of the Zhytomyr district, although it is its administrative center).
The main rivers are the Grouse , the Gnilyopyat , the Guiva , the Kodnyanka, and the Bobrovka , the Viva, the Deep, the Kamenka, the Koshcha , the Forest, the Rivets, the Sheika.

History
From the moment of its foundation ( 1928 ), the district was called Troyanovsky, the center of which was the village of Troyanov (now this village of Troyanov). In 1939 , the district was renamed Zhytomyr.
In the early 60s, it was reorganized - the territory and settlements are transferred mainly to Korostyshevsky territorial administration, the rest - to Berdichev. On August 4, 1965 , by the Decree of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR , the Zhytomyr Region was again restored with the administrative and cultural center in the city of Zhytomyr.
Demographics
The population of the district is 66.9 thousand people (2nd place among districts, data for 2005 ), including about 11 thousand living in urban areas. In total there are 90 settlements.
