History
The division was formed in July 1941 in the North Caucasus Military District as the 50th Cavalry Division. The division included many Cossacks from the Kuban villages, but the junior and middle command personnel were called up from the reserve and were notable for their low training. The formation of the division was carried out as soon as possible, already on the 20th of July the 50th cd (along with the 53rd cd formed just as quickly) took part in the Smolensk battle as part of the general group of Khomenko’s task force [1] .
In August, the 50th and 53rd cavalry divisions were merged under the command of Colonel Dovatora . Dovator’s Cavgroup was distinguished many times in battles, made daring raids on enemy rear lines and stubbornly defended the most important areas. On November 26, for the courage shown in battles with the German invaders, for the stamina, courage and heroism of the personnel, the 50th Cavalry Division was transformed into the 3rd Guards Cavalry Division.
