Biography
Kairpre was one of the sons of the ruler of the whole of Bregui and the High King of Ireland, Fogarth, Mack Neill , who died in 724. It belonged to Ui Hernayg , one of the two main branches of the genus Sil Aedo Slana [1] .
Kairpre mack Vogartaig inherited power over Lagor in 751, after the death of his brother Fergus mack Vogartaig [2] . Perhaps later he took possession of the title of king of all Brega. In this capacity, Kairpre is not mentioned in Flan Meinistrech ’s poem “ Síl Aeda Sláne na Sleg ” [3] , which was preserved in the Leinster Book , but he is endowed with this title by the Irish annals [4] . It is assumed that he could receive the title of king of all Brega after the death in 759 of Dungal poppy Amalgado from the Wy Honing clan [5] . Probably, Kairpre was forced to fight for possession of this title with a relative of the deceased king, the ruler of Nauta (North Brega) Kongalakh mak Konaying of the Wye Honing clan.
The Irish annals attest to the death of his cousin Domnall poppy Aeda in 759 and the brother of Finsnecht poppy Vogartaig in 761, but no details are provided about the circumstances of these events [6] . In 766 there was a battle between the Bregians and the army of the Kingdom of Meade [7] . The first mention of the name of Kairpre Mac Fogartig in the annals dates back to 767, when his son Kellah was killed by robbers [8] . In 769, King Lagora was expelled from Brega by Donnhad Midi from the Clann Holmine clan [1] [9] [10] . The following year, the army of Lagor was defeated by the Mead at the battle of Bolgg Boyne. Among the fallen on the battlefield were relatives of Kairpre, Kernach poppy Flynn and Flattbert poppy Flynn, as well as the ruler of Dessie Warhrid poppy Baet [11] . This battle took place simultaneously with the campaign of Donnhad Midi to Leinster. It is assumed that Kairpre at this time could be an ally of King Leinster Kellah poppy Dunhada in conflict with the ruler Mede [12] .
The Irish annals report the death of Kairpre poppy Vogartaig in 771, calling him King of Bregui ( dr. Irl. Rí Brega ) [1] [4] . After him, the throne of Lagor was inherited by Niall poppy Conaille , and the title of king of all Brega was established for the ruler of Nauta Kongalakh poppy Coning.
