Governor post
West Virginia was originally part of one of 13 colonies - Virginia . During the Civil War, the northwestern districts of Virginia separated and formed a new state, which was accepted into the United States on June 20, 1863. Two more Virginia counties - Berkeley and Jefferson - became part of the state on March 10, 1866.
A candidate for governor may be a US citizen aged 30 years or older who has been living in West Virginia for at least five years at the time of his inauguration [9] . , ratified in 1872, provides for a four-year term in office for a governor beginning on Monday after the second Wednesday of January of the year following the election year. [9] The first edition of the constitution of West Virginia indicated the term of office of the governor equal to only two years [10] .
not listed in the state constitution; if the post of governor becomes vacant, his duties are performed by the chairman of the state senate . If at the time of vacancy the term of the governor remains undeserved for more than a year, new elections are held; otherwise, the remainder of the term shall be served by the chairman of the state senate [11] . A law passed in 2000 conferred the honorary title of vice governor on the Senate Chairperson [12] , but this title is rarely used in practice, and the terms of office of the Senate Chairperson for West Virginia do not correspond to those of the Governor. The same law states that, in succession, the next after the chairman of the state senate is the speaker of the house of delegates , followed by the state attorney general, state auditor and (in the reverse order of office) former governors residing in the state during vacancy [12] .
