Story

The film begins with a meeting of writers on Monday morning at which they present their jokes. Writers stay up all night to finish their sketches for the next reading of scripts by Tuesday. Of the fifty-odd sketches, only nine will appear on the screens. In the following days, the scenery is under construction, long rehearsals, and ultimately the viewer sees a live show on Saturday night.

Production and rental

The film was shot by actor James Franco during a visit to the Tisha School of the Arts New York University in 2008 [2] . As the central subject of attention of the film, he chose comedian Bill Hader . At the same time, Franco, deciding to create a full-length documentary about the production process of the show, first had to get the approval of the creator and executive producer of “ Saturday Night Live ” Lorne Michaels , as well as the lead John Malkovich [3] .

After the filming was completed, the fame of most of the actors would not hinder the fame of the film until Franco began to seek permission to rent from NBC . However, as a result, the process dragged on for several years, including due to rearrangements of the executive staff of the television network. Later, the film was purchased by Ocilloscope Films with the intention of showing it in theaters. However, in 2012, the founder of the studio, Adam Yauh , died, thereby complicating the procedure [2] .

On September 26, 2014, the film was uploaded to the Hulu video portal as part of the celebration of the fortieth anniversary of Saturday Night Live [4] [5] .
