A native of Torrechiara , he studied with Petito at the Parma Academy , where he was awarded for the design of a city square in the style of classicism [1] . In 1775 he was appointed professor. About the completed Ferrari projects in Italy, no information has been preserved.
In the mid 1790s [2] at the invitation of his compatriot Quarenghi moved to Petersburg. By a personal decree dated July 22, 1795, which was “discharged from Italy through the architect Quarenghi to the painter Ferrari”, “a salary of 1000 rubles a year for an apartment of 300 rubles and for travel” was assigned [1] . At first, he painted in the Alexander and Ostankino palaces . The young Domenico Gilardi , who had just arrived in Russia from Switzerland, was busy as his apprentice. [3]
As an architect, Ferrari oversaw the construction of the Silver Rows on Nevsky Prospekt [4] . Under Paul I, he designed a 5-story tower of the city magistrate , stylized as a Tuscan campaign . This tower has forever become one of the vertical dominants of Nevsky. In 1799, he also built a house at the Lutheran Church of St. Peter [5] .
In 1802-03 Ferrari, together with F. A. Shcherbakov painted the theater and a number of other rooms of the Tauride Palace , which in those years was reconstructed after several years of use as a barracks. A year later, Luigi Ruska instructed the same masters to paint the halls of the Strelninsky Palace , which suffered from a fire [1] .
