Pontic wheatgrass [2] ( lat. Agropyron ponticum ) is a species of monocotyledonous plants of the genus Zhitnyak ( Agropyron ) of the Cereals family ( Poaceae ). The taxonomic name was published by the Russian botanist Sergei Arsenievich Nevsky in 1934 [3] .

As a rule (but not always [2] ) it is considered a synonym for Agropyron cristatum ( L. ) Gaertn. [4] or a subspecies of Agropyron cristatum subsp. ponticum ( Nevski ) Tzvelev [5] .
The taxon was described from Crimea [5] .
Herbaceous plant. Leaves lanceolate or linear. Inflorescence is an ear of small flowers. The fruit is a yellow kernel [2] .
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14 [6] .
