Amateur career
He played 64 matches in the amateur ring, 56 of which he won.
In 2005, at the Youth Olympic Games he won a bronze medal at the age of 15 years.
Professional career
Jermell Charlo made his debut in the professional ring in December 2007 in the welterweight division, after several fights he moved to the first middleweight.
The first years of performances he fought with mostly inexperienced young boxers. In 2012, he knocked out American Chris Chetman.
In January 2013, he knocked out in the 8th round of the American, Gary Joe Yorgi (25-1) , and won the title of Continental Champion of America according to the WBC [1] .
On June 8, 2013, he won the American Championship (USBA), defeating the experienced American boxer Demetrius Hopkins (33-2) on points.
On January 25, 2014, he won on points a two-time contender for the title of world champion, Mexican, Gabriel Rosado [2] .
In May 2014, he defeated an American, Charlie Ota. [3]
On March 28, 2015, Charlo had a fight with an American boxer of Armenian descent, Vanes Martirosyan (35-1-1) . In a viscous battle, Charlo won on points by unanimous decision [4] .
On October 31, 2015, he knocked out the former world champion, the Haitian, Joashen Alsin .
May 21, 2016 won by knockout in the eighth round of John Jackson and won the vacant WBC world title . [5] .
On December 22, 2018, in an equal battle, he lost to Tony Harrison by unanimous decision and lost the WBC world title . [6]
